Elkton is a small, historic town nestled on the banks of the Umpqua River. Timbered hills and pastured valleys surround the city, located at the junction of Highways 38 and 138 - just 35 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

The Coastal Range protects Elkton from the ocean fog, affording a sunny, temperate climate with just enough rainfall to nourish the tall trees, lush vegetation, and local vineyards.

Eugene is 50 miles to the northeast and Roseburg is 36 miles to the southeast.  Both of these urban areas offer cultural diversions and excellent medical facilities.

The Elkton area is known for it’s year-round fishing of bass, steelhead, salmon, and sturgeon.  Four award winning

wineries are located in town with many vineyards in the out-lying area.

The area’s soil is fertile for pastures, seed crops, berries, orchards and bountiful gardens.  Visitors to Elkton often comment on the friendliness of the people, the green of the landscape, and the community’s pride in its schools and its appearance.  Residents agree:  Elkton is a great place to live.

Our District

Nestled in Oregon’s scenic Coastal Range, the Elkton School District offers a bountiful mix of high achieving students and a dedicated staff.  The school district covers approximately 307 square miles and serves 148 students.

Our grade school earned an “excellent” rating on the Oregon State Report Card in 2005, and our high school  SAT scores have surpassed state and national averages most years out of the last 20.  A majority of our students pursue higher education.

101 students attend Elkton Grade School in grades Kindergarten through eight and 47 students attend Elkton High School in grades nine through twelve.  The district has one administrator serving as grade school principal, high school principal and district superintendent.

The district employs 14 licensed staff members and 18 full and part-time classified employees.  The grade school is enriched with a reading and math resource room.  The high school offers a comprehensive program of unusual breadth for a small student population.  Students with disabilities receive special education through the district and the Douglas Education Service District.

The Elkton school board is comprised of seven citizens who establish policies and govern the affairs of the district.  Seven additional citizens are appointed to serve on the district budget committee.  The district has an active Site Council made up of six staff members, four parents, two students, and one administrator .
